Aftercare Instructions (Facial Acupuncture)

Aftercare Following Facial Acupuncture Treatment

Thank you for choosing Clarkston Acupuncture Clinic for your healthcare needs. This page provides you with essential aftercare instructions to follow post-treatment. The guidelines aim to maximise the effectiveness of your acupuncture session and ensure a smooth recovery.

Immediate Aftercare

Facial Acupuncture is a safe procedure, allowing you to resume your normal activities immediately. However, for optimal results, we suggest the following:

Immediate Aftercare (First 24-48 Hours)

  1. Don't use make-up, and try to avoid touching your face (including with your mobile phone) for the first 12 hours.

  2. Avoid Strenuous Activity: Keep physical activity to a minimum to prevent excessive sweating and increased blood flow to the face.

  3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help remove toxins released during the treatment.

  4. No Alcohol or Caffeine: Avoid consuming alcohol and caffeine as they can dehydrate the skin and minimise the effects of the treatment.

  5. Sleep Position: Try to sleep on your back to prevent putting pressure on the face and interfering with the treatment effects.

Ongoing Care

  1. Skincare Routine: Maintain a gentle skincare routine. Use mild cleansers and be gentle when applying and removing products.

  2. Moisturize: Use a good-quality moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and aid recovery.

  3. Sun Protection: Use a high-SPF sunscreen daily to protect your skin from UV damage and prevent premature ageing.

  4. Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and ensure adequate sleep to support the effects of Acupuncture.

  5. Avoid Stress: Managing stress through meditation or gentle yoga exercises can support skin health and overall well-being.

  6. Mind Your Diet: Eat antioxidant-rich foods to support skin health and repair.

  7. Avoid Facial Manipulation: Refrain from undergoing other facial treatments or manipulations for a few days to allow your skin to settle.

  8. Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Steer clear of extremely hot or cold environments (like saunas or ice baths) for a few days post-treatment.

  9. Follow-Up Sessions: Stick to the schedule for your follow-up sessions to maximise and maintain the benefits of the treatment.

Symptoms to Monitor

While the majority of patients don't experience any side effects from the treatment, there are occasional minor occurrences, such as:

  • Slight Bruising or Redness: It's common to have minor bruising or redness at the needle insertion sites that is usually harmless and disappears within a couple of days. You can try Arnica to speed up the disappearance of bruising.

  • Mild Aches: Some people experience mild aching or tenderness after the treatment, which generally resolves independently in a few hours but occasionally persists for a few days.

  • Emotional Sensitivity: Emotional release is not uncommon following an acupuncture session, especially if the treatment has been successful. It will settle quickly.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Serious adverse events are extremely rare. Consult a healthcare provider or return to the clinic if you experience:

  • Severe or prolonged pain at the insertion sites

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness that doesn't resolve

  • Any signs of infection, like increased redness, warmth, or swelling at the insertion sites

Follow-Up Appointments

You will likely experience a significant improvement in your skin after the first treatment, but the most significant impact will be achieved with a series of regular treatments. Dr Eoghan Colgan will discuss this with you at the clinic.
