Welcome to Clarkston Acupuncture Clinic

Thank you for choosing Clarkston Acupuncture Clinic for your healthcare needs. We are delighted to be entrusted with your health and well-being. This webpage aims to prepare you with essential information for your first visit to our clinic.

During Your First Appointment

The first appointment will typically last between 45-60 minutes and will include:

  • A review of your medical history

  • A discussion of your current issues and the creation of a treatment plan

  • Your first treatment

  • Follow-up plans and expectations

What to Expect During the Treatment

  • Position: You'll typically lie down on a padded table, face-up, face-down, or on your side, depending on the areas being treated.

  • Needle Insertion: Eoghan will insert thin, sterile needles at specific points on your body. The number of needles and their locations depend on your condition and treatment plan.

  • Sensation: Most people feel minimal or no pain during needle insertion. Once the needles are in place, you may feel tingling, warmth, or heaviness. These sensations are generally considered a sign that the treatment is working.

  • Needle Retention: The needles are usually left in place for 20 minutes. During this time, you can relax and enjoy the calming music.

  • Needle Removal: Eoghan will remove the needles after the set time, usually without any discomfort.

  • Immediate Effects: Depending on how you respond to the treatment, you may feel relaxed or energised. Some people experience immediate relief of symptoms, while others may take a few sessions to notice an effect.

  • Care Instructions: Eoghan may provide specific instructions, like avoiding vigorous exercise, alcohol, or certain foods for a period after treatment.

  • Follow-Up: Depending on your condition, you may need several treatments. Eoghan will discuss a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Potential Side Effects

Acupuncture is a very safe procedure. Serious side effects are extremely rare. Some commoner side effects include:

  • Minor Bleeding or Bruising: At the needle insertion sites.

  • Pain or Soreness: Mild discomfort during or after the needle insertion. Occasionally, this discomfort can last for a few hours and, in rare circumstances, 1 or 2 days.

  • Dizziness or Fainting: Especially for individuals who are sensitive or prone to fainting.

  • Sweating: Either local to the insertion points or general sweating of feet, hands, and forehead.

  • Temporary Tiredness: Some people report feeling fatigued after a session.

  • Worsening of Symptoms: Some people report worsening of their symptoms after an acupuncture session. Some view this positively as a sign that you will respond more favourably at subsequent treatments. Please get in touch with the clinic if this happens to you.
